Testing Soft Magnets

In our previous blog, we explained the wide range of testing and magnetising equipment used in testing permanent magnets.

Now our focus switches to testing Soft Magnetics where we have asked our Soft Magnetics Technical Manager Andy Hayling to talk us through the process.

Test for Success

At MagDev, an area we excel at is fully characterising our soft ferrite material, in order to do this, we have a test set-up which includes multiple elements such as our HI-Q Impedance analysers.

We use two impedance analysers  which are controlled by a single PC, one goes up to 13 MHZ and the other up to 1 Giga Hertz.

This enables us to measure parameters such as: -

  • Permeability
  • Inductance  factor
  • Loss factor
  • Hysteresis factor
  • Temperature factor

We can also run a frequency sweep which allows us to generate the complex permeability curves, and also produces results for impedance and loss factor at the tested frequencies.

The Heat is on

Another area we offer at MagDev Ltd is the ability to perform power loss testing.

To do this we use complex equipment including: -

  • A signal generator and RF amplifier to drive the core which is under test
  • A temperature chamber  to check losses for a wide temperature range.
  • A power meter to collect the data

Added to this, is our ability to test power loss at high frequency approaching a few MHz.  For this  we use an Oscilloscope, coupled with a computer to capture the data.
