What are Neodymium Magnets?
In a nutshell, Neodymium is a rare earth element which can be used to create powerful magnets.
Neodymium magnets are the strongest known magnets relative to their mass, with even small magnets able to support a thousand times their own weight.
However, despite being classed as a ‘rare’ earth metal in the periodic table, neodymium is widely available to manufacture neodymium magnets. Because of their strength, neodymium magnets are used in a broad range of applications including jewellery, toys, computer equipment as well motors and generators for planes, trains and automobiles. Various coatings are available to protect the magnets from corrosion.
Versatility of Neodymium
Neodymium magnets can be produced for both commercial and industry needs and even medical and dental.
For example, in a piece of magnetic jewellery a neo magnet is used to keep the earring in place, whilst it is also neo magnets that were sent into space to help collect dust from the surface of Mars.
Neodymium magnets are also used in applications such as welding clamps, oil filters, geocaching, mounting tools, costumes and many, many more.
Sintered Neodymium Iron Boron
At Magdev we stock the Sintered NdFeB which is the strongest commercially available magnetic material.
A £1-coin sized disc can lift 10kg, opening up a lot of design opportunities as long as the material’s temperature and corrosion constraints are taken into account.
Make sure you read our previous blog where we take a more in-depth look at the Sintered Neodymium Iron Boron.
