Although not as strong as rare-earth magnets like neodymium, alnico block magnets can be used in magnetic circuits to generate relatively strong magnetic fields. After their development in the 1930s, alnico magnets held the spot as the strongest commercially available magnet until the 70s, when they were largely displaced by samarium magnets.
Despite the introduction of stronger magnets, alnico’s incredible temperature stability and impressive resistance to corrosion make it a valuable material to this day. In fact, alnico has the highest operating temperature of any magnetic material. With a Curie temperature of 800°C and a maximum working temperature of 550°C, alnico block magnets are essential for applications involving extreme heat.
Alnico block magnets are incredibly versatile, and can be easily demagnetised and re-magnetised to suit different purposes. Unlike hard ferrite magnets, alnico magnets are also electrically conductive. The strongest types of alnico block magnets are anisotropic, which can only be magnetised in a single direction. Isotropic alnico magnets, although weaker, offer more versatility as they can be magnetised in any direction.
