Permanent ferrite magnets, often known as ceramic magnets, are frequently used as a cheap alternative to rare-earth magnets when strength is not critical. The most common uses of ferrite magnets include fridge magnets, brakes, clamps, loudspeakers, security systems, medical instruments and a wide range of other applications.

Ferrite is a ceramic material, made using iron oxide and small amounts of other metallic elements, such as strontium, nickel, manganese and zinc. Ferrite is electrically non-conductive, which means ferrite magnets act as insulators, and can either be magnetised (hard ferrite) or attracted to a magnet (soft ferrite).

Hard ferrite, also called sintered ferrite, is the permanent magnet form of the material and is difficult to demagnetise. They’re often used for loudspeakers, refrigerator magnets and electrical motors. Soft ferrites, on the other hand, are conductors of magnetic fields and can easily change their magnetisation. They’re often used as magnetic cores (known as ferrite cores) in the electronics industry, useful for transformers, high-frequency inductors and microwaves.

Ferrite magnets are a popular, low-cost alternative to rare-earth magnets, which come at a much higher price. Although ferrite magnets only operate at roughly one-tenth of the strength of neodymium magnets, they’re great for applications that don’t require the power of a rare-earth magnet. They’re also extremely resistant to corrosion.

The main reason ferrite magnets are so popular is that they’re great value for money. Despite their affordability, they offer incredible performance, and are able to withstand heat up to 250°C, making them one of the most popular permanent magnets for everyday applications.

Here at MagDev, we supply a variety of shapes of ferrite magnets, including discs, blocks, rings and countersunk options. Whatever your project or industry, we’re sure to have a magnetic solution to suit. We also offer bespoke soft and hard ferrite material, engineered to your specifications.
