Samarium Cobalt Countersunk Magnets
Samarium cobalt (SmCo) countersunk magnets are an incredibly versatile type of permanent magnet. Designed with a countersunk hole, these magnets are easy to fix onto surfaces by using a matching screw, making them a popular choice for DIY applications such as fixings, gate latches and soft-closing systems. They’re also handy for shop fittings, and are often used in screens, window displays, shelving and lighting systems.Read more
Depending on whether you need your samarium countersunk magnets to repel or attract, they can be bought with either pole on the magnetic face. If you’re using two magnets to attract each other, you need to make sure the opposite poles are facing each other.
Samarium cobalt is a type of permanent magnet that can operate at a wide range of temperatures. They’re part of the rare-earth family of permanent magnets, along with neodymium magnets. Although neodymium is the stronger of the two, samarium cobalt countersunk magnets can withstand much higher temperatures, with operating temperatures ranging from 350⁰C down to just above absolute zero (-273⁰C). Because they’re made from cobalt – rather than iron, like neodymium magnets – they’re also much more resistant to rust and corrosion.
Before samarium cobalt magnets were developed in the 1970s, the strongest magnet was alnico. After their introduction to the market, samarium magnets remained the strongest magnet until neodymium was discovered a decade later. Although they lost their spot as the strongest rare-earth magnet, they’re still a popular choice for industries working with extreme temperatures.
