Samarium cobalt (SmCo) rod magnets are a strong, cylindrical magnet with a thickness that’s equal to or larger than their diameter, meaning they generate extremely high levels of magnetism from a fairly small surface pole area. Because of their greater magnetic length, samarium rod magnets have a high Gauss value – a type of measurement used to determine the intensity of a magnetic field. Samarium rod magnets are often chosen over neodymium rod magnets for two key reasons: they can operate at much higher temperatures, and they’re more resistant to rust and corrosion. Although not as strong as neodymium magnets, samarium cobalt magnets can operate at a wide range of temperatures – from just above absolute zero (-273⁰C) up to 350⁰C.
Like neodymium magnets, samarium cobalt rod magnets are a type or rare-earth magnet, which is a permanent magnet made from alloys of rare-earth elements. While neodymium magnets are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron, samarium cobalt magnets are made from an alloy of samarium and cobalt. These types of permanent magnets only suffer minute losses of magnetism over time, making them essential for long-term applications.
