Samarium cobalt (SmCo) is a type of permanent magnet that can operate at a wide range of temperatures. They’re part of the rare-earth family of permanent magnets, along with neodymium magnets. Although they’re not as strong as neodymium, samarium cobalt magnets outperform neodymium magnets in two key ways: they can operate at much higher temperatures, and they’re more resistant to rust and corrosion.

Samarium cobalt magnets are mainly used in automotive and industrial manufacturing industries, but they can also be used for research and engineering purposes. This material is highly resistant to corrosion, combining higher working temperatures with a lower loss of magnetism per ⁰C than neodymium – at approximately 80% of the strength.

While regular neodymium magnets can operate at temperatures up to 80⁰C, samarium cobalt magnets can withstand heat up to 350⁰C – making them essential for industries with a high operating temperature. And it’s not just heating where samarium outperforms neodymium – samarium magnets can still operate at temperatures nearing absolute zero (-273⁰C).

When samarium cobalt magnets were first developed in the 1970s, they were considered a magnetic revolution – tripling the maximum energy product of any other magnet. Until the introduction of neodymium, samarium cobalt magnets were the strongest commercially available magnet – but increasing production costs led engineers to develop a cheaper solution.

The higher price of samarium magnets is due to the cost of producing cobalt, which is much greater than the cost of producing iron. However, the absence of iron in samarium cobalt makes them much more resistant to corrosion when compared to neodymium magnets, which contain up to 75% iron.
