Alnico Magnets

Alnico magnets are a type of permanent magnet, taking their name from an acronym of aluminium (Al), nickel (Ni), and cobalt (Co) the main elements used to make the alloy.

Alnico is one of the earliest groups of modern magnetic materials. Although they’ve largely been superseded by stronger rare-earth magnets, alnico magnets are still used in a variety of applications, including electric motors, electric guitar pickups, sensors, loudspeakers, microphones, and a host of everyday items.

Alnico magnets can produce strong magnetic fields in the correct circuits, and can easily be demagnetised and re-magnetised. Although more expensive than ferrite magnets, alnico can operate at the highest temperatures of any magnetic material. With a Curie temperature of 800°C and a maximum working temperature of 550°C, alnico magnets are essential for applications involving extreme heat. Although still brittle, alnico is also less brittle than its rare-earth successors.

Until the introduction of rare-earth magnets like samarium and neodymium, alnico magnets were the strongest option available. The most powerful types of alnico magnets are anisotropic, meaning they can only be magnetised in a single direction. Although they’re the weaker option, isotropic alnico magnets are more versatile, as they can be magnetised in any direction.

We have a wide range of sizes and shapes of alnico magnets available online, as well as hundreds of more options if you contact us directly. Whatever your project or industry, we’re sure to have a magnetic solution to suit. If you need something outside of our standard range, don’t worry – we also offer custom-made alnico magnets, engineered to your specifications.
