Alnico Rod Magnets
Alnico rod magnets are a strong, cylindrical magnet with a thickness that’s equal to or larger than their diameter. Their shape means they generate extremely high levels of magnetism from a small surface pole area, giving them a high Gauss value (the measurement used to determine the intensity of a magnetic field). Because their poles are further apart, alnico rod magnets throw their field much further than other types of magnets, making them great for things like reed-switch and Hall-effect sensor-based security systems.
Similar in strength to hard ferrite, alnico rod magnets are a type of permanent magnet that can be used in circuits to produce a strong magnetic field. Although more expensive than ferrite, alnico has the advantage of being electrically conductive. It can also withstand much higher temperatures, with a maximum working temperature of 550°C.
Developed in the 1930s, alnico rod magnets get their name from an acronym of aluminium (Al), nickel (Ni), and cobalt (Co). They were one of the first modern magnetic materials, and until the development of samarium magnets approximately 40 years later, alnico was the strongest magnet available. Despite the introduction of stronger magnets, alnico remains essential for applications that require extreme heat. It’s also more resistant to corrosion than magnets like neodymium.
