Neodymium Magnets

Often referred to as ‘super magnets’, neodymium magnets are the strongest and most widely-used permanent magnets available. Regardless of their size, neodymium magnets have an incredibly powerful magnetic force. Capable of lifting over a thousand times their own weight, even the smallest magnet has a surprising amount of force. That’s why neodymium magnets are a good choice when a project requires the smallest magnet possible, without sacrificing on strength.

Developed in the 1980s, neodymium magnets are a fairly new magnetic advancement, but they’ve already had a huge impact on how we build and develop machinery. Commonly used for lifting, sensing, filtering and powering in a wide range of industries, these versatile magnets have incredible holding power. Used in everything from dentures and DIY projects to audio equipment and MRI scanners, neodymium magnets have a wide variety of applications. Because they produce a strong magnetic force from a minute volume of magnetic material, they’ve also helped drive the miniaturisation of things like loudspeakers and power tools.

Neodymium magnets are made from an alloy of neodymium, iron and boron, with a classic silver surface that comes from a nickel-copper-nickel coating. They’re what’s known as a ‘rare-earth magnet’, which is a strong permanent made from alloys of rare-earth elements. These types of magnets only have minimal losses of magnetism over time, making them essential for modern industries and products that require long-term magnets, such as cordless tools and magnetic fasteners.

Neodymium magnets can lose their strength if they’re exposed to heat that exceeds the maximum operating temperature, which is between 80 – 100 °C for regular neodymium magnets. However, different grades of magnets can withstand higher temperatures, with some of our neodymium magnets able to withstand temperatures up to 240°C. Damage to the protective plating can also cause neodymium magnets to rust and therefore lose their magnetism over time.
