Samarium cobalt (SmCo) block magnets have a variety of applications, including motors, generators, aerospace and manufacturing industries, as well as experimental research and engineering. Many of these applications depend on samarium cobalt magnets due to their large temperature range – from just above absolute zero (-273⁰C) up to 350⁰C.
Samarium cobalt is what’s known as a rare-earth magnet, which is a type of permanent magnet made from alloys of rare-earth elements, such as samarium and cobalt. Until the introduction of neodymium magnets, they were the strongest type of permanent magnet available. Although they only operate at 80% the strength of neodymium magnets, samarium cobalt block magnets can withstand much higher temperatures and are more resistant to corrosion.
First developed in the 1970s, samarium cobalt magnets were a huge advancement in magnetics. But because of the high cost of producing cobalt, engineers started to look for a cheaper option, which is how neodymium magnets came into production. This is also why samarium cobalt magnets are generally more expensive than neodymium magnets, which are made from iron. However, the absence of iron in samarium cobalt makes them much more resistant to corrosion when compared to neodymium magnets, which contain up to 75% iron.
